This summer we traveled to Greece and Crete island. The last 10 years we have spent our summer in Portugal, and we now thougt it was time to try something else. I spend hours and hours researching for the perfect place to go, and let me tell you right away which criteries we have for the perfect summer holiday spot. We want a quiet place away from mass tourism, a nice beach close by and walking distance to restaurants. We found all this in eastern Crete just outside the small town of Elounda.
The hotels arround here are build into the hills, as you can see in the photo below, which did not spoil the coastline. Be aware that there is a lot of steep up- and downhill walking, every time you step outside Elounda Blu, they do have small golf boogies that will take you uphill to your room though. The room we stayed in was a bit dated, but nice enough with a small balcony with a table and chairs overlooking Mirabello bay and Spinalonga Island.
The beach just below the hotel, was quiet and narrow – in July we could not be sure the find a free sunbed in the middle of the day. The sea was really really wonderfull – totally clear, warm and calm, almost like you were in a pool. The only downside was the small pebbles you had to walk through to get into the water.
This was the view from our sunbeds at the beach – Plaka and Spinalonga island in the distance.
Part of the pool area at the Elounda Blu. Even though the area is quite big, still not enough sunbeds and umbrellas in July – we did not spend much time at the pool, as we prefer the beach.
Another fantastic vista from Elound Blu hotel.
